Vicarious Trauma and Other Hazards of the Helping Professions

Hearing other people’s stories of trauma and abuse has an inevitable impact on those who listen to try to understand and help. It’s not usually just one story, it’s the accumulation of many stories, of sharing the pain and caring about many clients over a period of time. We begin to react emotionally, to shut down or to feel overwhelmed and powerless.

Therapists, treating practitioners, carers and support workers are particularly vulnerable as they are on the front line of bringing hope and healing to victims. You can’t afford to ignore the issue of vicarious trauma if you want to perform at your best for the long term.
