What is strategic planning?
First of all, it’s a process.
It’s a process of:
- defining your organisation’s vision,
- clarifying the direction you want to take in the next one or more years,
- setting goals consistent with that direction, and
- making plans to achieve those goals.
Because it is a process, strategic planning provides opportunity for your leadership to meet together to discuss relevant issues for your organisation. That, in itself, reaps benefits for morale, motivation and teamwork.
Because it is a process of defining your vision and goals, it helps you understand your organisation’s strengths and vulnerabilities.
My Approach
In leading a strategic planning process, I incorporate these activities:
- Individual interviews with managers and leaders
- Review past strategic plans and relevant documents
- Group session to review the information gathered from individual interviews and develop a draft strategic plan
- Provision of a final draft to the manager for evaluation and feedback
- Delivery of a completed strategic plan.
My strategic plans are easy to read and practical. It’s your plan, though, so I work closely with you to make it truly useful for your organisation.
